Analysis of corroded cast iron pipes made evident that, differing from the classical theory, a topotactic and an epitaxial layer of incrustations is built up in the presence of oxygen containing drinking water. The topotactic layer (essentially siderite and amorphous ferromagnetic oxides) is especially important with respect to corrosion protection. Measurement of the 'corrosive oxygen demand' presents excellent information about corrosion rates during the building up of the protective layers in laboratory tests. In real distribution systems of the Hanover waterworks the corrosive oxygen demand corresponds to a corrosion rate of 0.006 millimetres per year. (Kursetz)
