Elasto-plastic analysis of long span suspension bridges considering the effect of finite deformation
Two analytical methods are presented herein to investigate nonlinear behaviour of long span suspension bridges, especially unstable phenomenon of the main towers; one is extended from the deflection theory, and the other is based on the finite deformation theory, both enable us to analyze the elasto-plastic behaviours of the whole system of suspension bridges under any kind of plane loading. In assition, numerical calculations are carried our for a bridge with 1500 m center span and for one with 770 m center span, and clarify the effect of the residual stress in the lower and that of the finite deformation in the cable system on the load carrying capacity of the bridge after the verification of the coupling effect between the tower and the cable-girder system.
