Waterproofing a new composite steel-prestressed concrete structure
A new composites steel-prestressed concrete structure has been developed for the strength members of offshore structures. The composite structure is composed of biaxially prestressed concrete and a steel frame surrounding the concrete. The prefabricated composite structural panels are joined together to build the main structure by welding the steel frames. The composite structure has to be impervious to water to withstand the working conditions ar sea. Several tests were performed to investigate the sealing properties of the structure. The fundamental waterproofing properties of the composite structure were first examined using ten small-scale models with various waterproof treatments, then, using a full-scale model. The structure's waterproofing characteristics under static and repeated loads were also investigated. Moreover, the effect of the magnitude of prestressing the concrete upon the waterproof characteristics was studied. It was proved through these experimental studies that if the composite structural panel is fabricated with extreme care and consideration, using good workable and finished concrete, the structure can be completely waterproofed. Even if the structure's waterproofing characteristics are insufficient, it will be improved within a relativery short time by the chemical reaction of water discharged into the concrete with certain ingredients in the concrete.
