A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Turbulence, bluff body aerodynamics and wind engineering
This paper has been written to provide some background to a session primarily concerned with the fluid mechanics of turbulent flows, with applications to the field of wind engineering. Initially, the effects of turbulence, including the effects of scale on the flow over bluff bodies and the resultant pressures and forces, are reviewed. The effects of turbulence on the response of large structures are discussed and an explanation for the recently observed very large increase of response of box girder bridge decks with turbulence is offered. Further influences of turbulence on the determination of design wind speeds and probability distributions of processes related to wind engineering are summarised. (Willmitzer)
