Tension measurement by microtremor-induced vibration method and development of tension meter
The micrometer induced vibration method is suitable for on site measurement of cable tension. To develop this instrument relations between the cable tension and the natural frequency of the cable must be investigated. So, by theoretical analysis and experiment, the effects of the cable characteristics and boundary condition to the accuracy of the cable tension were considered before hand. A tension meter was fabricated to confirm this method. A microcomputer in the tension meter automatically analyzes signals from the accelerometers, and calculates the cable tension. A new algorithm for discrete Fourier transformation was developed for practical analysis of the signals. Then, by utilizing the data from the previous experiment, the tension was measured in the tension arrangement process of a Nielsen-system stiffened arch bridge, the Ishimori Bridge, which was constructed by IHI in Aomori Prefecture. Forty cables were measured in two hours. By two trials, we could arrange the cable tension within five percent of the designed value. The microtremor induced vibration method has been verified to be useful for tension measurement and the tension meter also has been verified to be a practical tool. (Wassmann)
