Fire protection considerations in utility coal handling systems
Special fire protection design considerations are necessary when designing a new or modifying an existing coal handling system. coal supplies, water supply systems, waste water disposal system, ventilation systems, and electrical systems are all affected. These effects are discussed in general for both new and retrofit installations and specifically as they relate to the major modification of the coal handling system at Salt River Project's Coronado Generating Station (CGS). The coal handling fire protection systems for CGS are described in detail. Special emphasis is placed on various design aspects of the coal handling equipment as they relate to fire protection considerations and their impact on the balance of the plant. Personnel safety in below grade tunnels, the reclaim of trapped, burning coal, and detection and alarm systems are explained.
