Vertical coalescing plate separator for water and wastewater treatment
A pilot scale vertical coalescing plate separator was tested in laboratory experiments with clays, river sediment, scrubber sludge and flayash suspensions. The study focused on determining the operation and limits of the CPS. Two and four plate pack separators were evaluated. Operational parameters such as flowrates, plate spacing and number of plate pack units were analyzed. Each material suspension was characterized in terms of settling characteristics, particle size and distribution, and concentration of suspended solids. The effectiveness of pretreatment of the clays by flocculating with a polyelectrolyte was determined. Rough comparisons of the space requirements of a typical clarifier and a CPS for solids removal are given.
