Solute preferential sorption in reverse osmosis
This report is concerned with factors affecting the removal of hydrocarbons from water by a pressure-driven membrane separation process. In this project, the reverse osmosis separation of single solute aqueous solutions is reported. Data are presented for six solutes (three cyclic hydrocarbons and three aromatic hydrocarbons) at feed concentrations ranging from 5 to 260 ppm at different applied pressures and using cellulose acetate membranes of different surface porosity. The results are explained in terms of the magnitude and direction of solute-solvent-membrane interactions. The results show that the separation of hydrocarbon solutes from water decreases as the applied pressure increases, while remaining independent of the solution concentration. The separation decreases, reaches a local minimum, and then increases as the membrane porosity increases.
