Critical evaluation of new plate theories applied to laminated composites
The plate theory recently developed by Levinson is extended to laminates. Closed-form solutions of this theory, as well as those of Reissnet-Mindlin plate theory with appropriate shear correction, Seide's discrete-layer plate theory, and Lo, Christensen, and Wu's higher-order theory are all compared with Pagano's elasticity-theory solution for the cases of cylindrical bending of a single orthotropic layer and a symmetric cross-ply (0 deg/90 deg/0 deg) laminate consisting of three equal-thickness layers. Quantities compared are maximum plate deflection, bending stress distribution, and transverse shear stress distribution.
