The effect of mixing time on the tribological properties of moulded asbestos brake linings
Moulded asbestos brake linings produced in Egypt consists of asbestos (chrysotil type); phenolic formaldehide resin as a binder; barium sulfate as inorganic additive; and copper chips as metallic additive. All the above constituents are well mixed, then preformed by cold pressing, then cured by hot pressing. The linings are then grounded to the final shape. To stabilize the polymerization process of the organic constituent the linings are post cured. If the constituents are not mixed well to the proper degree they will be contaminated and all the lining properties will be affected. In the present work linings of the same formulation were prepared with different mixing times. Mechanical, physical, chemical, and functional properties were measured, as well as the structure properties were studied. An optimum mixing time mixing time to get suitable coefficient of friction and moderate wear rate was achieved.
