Design and cost/benefit issues for seismically isolated structures
Seismic (or base) isolation is a design concept that offers significant benefits for reducing the earthquake damage potential in both buildings and bridges. This paper addresses the feasibility, design philosophy and cost/benefit issues of building base isolation design. Also included is a detailed design procedure for a lead-rubber bearing seismic isolation system. This is illustrated by means of an example on a twelve-story structure.
