Computational procedure for cold-formed sheet metal beam design using the AISI guide
The post-buckling strength of a thin-walled beam structure is difficult to ascertain, but is known to have a significant effect on the overall performance of a given beam. This paper presents the effective width method as developed by G. Winter and adapted for use in the AISI 'Cold-Formed Steel Design Manual'. A computer program was developed using the equations presented in the AISI Design Manual. A prediction of the maximum load that a given simply supported beam can withstand is provided in the output from the computer program, along with the beam's section properties.
