Measurement versus estimation of railway bridge fatigue
A suite of short span railway bridges made of rolled steel joists with welded coverplates were investigated to establish the fatigue life. Since the predicted life using codes of practice was short, field measurements became necessary to establish the influence line, the relation of measured axle weights to estimate values, and the effective impact factor, in order to improve confidence in, and accuracy of, load effect estimation. The estimate of fatigue resistance was improved by numerical studies using fracture mechanics, and by some endurance tests on original girders. An improvement in predicted fatigue life was gained.
