Weathering steels - failures to learn from good material, bad location
A coastal Florida community commissioned an architect to design a series of bridges to span creeks and drainage ditches on its golf course and adjacent community parks. A weathering steel was choose for the structural material and 2-in. thick cedar dimension lumber for decking. After a year, however, the weathering steel leveling spacer was found to be so heavily corroded that they could be manipulated by hand on some supports. Further investigation of the sites where corrosion was both light and heavy revealed the reasons for the varying degrees of corrosion.
