Seismic isolation design of the new international terminal at San Francisco International Airport
This paper presents the seismic isolation design of the new International Terminal at San Francisco International Airport, which is the centerpiece of the Airport's dollar 2.4 billion expansion and modernization program. In response to the critical nature of the functions of a large strategically located airport with both international and domestic traffic, the San Francisco International Airport addressed seismic performance goals with the stated desire to further limit potential damage and disruption to the new facilities following a major earthquake. Linear dynamic time history analyses were performed to evaluate the performance of various structural systems including seismic isolation system. Furthermore, the design parameters for the isolation system design and the superstructure response to different levels of earthquake is also presented. The New International Terminal Building will be the largest base isolated building in the world with over 1.2 million square feet of floor area and over 22 million cubic feet of interior volume.
