Stability and performance of controlled civil engineering structures using MR dampers
One issue brought forth regarding the use of active control systems is in their ability to perform adequately when unmodeled or mismodeled dynamics are present in the system. In fact, instabilities may result when the control system is not robust enough to deal with such effects. Semi-active devices such as the magnetorheological (MR) damper are considered to be inherently stable because they do not have the ability to add energy to the structural system. However the performance of semi-active devices in such situations must be considered. Here the ability of the semi-active system to perform adequately is examined when various types of modeling errors are present.
