Early stages of glass fibre corrosion in alkaline solutions

Alkali resistant fibres were investigated after corrosion in alkaline solutions. Secondary neutral mass spectrometry and nuclear reaction analysis showed a severe preexperimental corrosion, with an enrichment of especially Ca close, and of Na closest to the surface. This difference from the bulk composition explains the incongruent dissolution behaviour, which is deduced from the eluate analysis. After passing this corroded layer an interdiffusion of Na and H/H2O can be observed, parallel to the formation of a Zr-rich layer, which in turn is slowing down corrosion. Atomic force microscopy elucidates the uneven corrosion process in the early stage and the development of a soft topmost corrosion layer.
