Design features of the Sophia Rail Tunnel in the Betuweroute
This paper outlines the design phase of the longest of three bored tunnels in the Betuweroute: the twin bored Sophia Railway Tunnel, with a total length of 8.1 km. A project overview and general information is given first. The paper then highlights the design concept of the tunnel and the risk analysis regarding the crossing of the main polder dikes. In addition, characteristic design features of several elements of the tunnel construction are described in more detail. Finally the construction activities, which started at the end of 1998, and the TBM concept are described.
