Inorganic intumescent coating for improved fire protection of GRP
This paper will discuss the use of an inorganic intumescent coating to improve the fire resistance of vinyl ester resin based glass reinforced composites. An alkali silicate based coating that releases water vapour, which functions as the blowing agent for the softened inorganic coating at temperatures between 200 and 250 degree C, was applied to the vinyl ester GRP using a thin glass mat intermediate layer. The resin side of the glass mat was anchored in the organic polymer while the coated side of the glass mat provided a rough inorganic substrate that facilitated inorganic coating adherence. Coated vinyl ester panels prepared in this manner were tested for heat and visible smoke release using the oxygen consumption calorimeter (ASTM E 1354), for specific optical density of smoke (ASTM E 662), for surface flammability (ASTM E 162) and using the US Navy quarter scale flashover test (MIL-STD-2031). The results showed that panels coated in this manner passed all tests but for the specific optical density of smoke, the limit for which was exceeded 17 minutes into a 20 minute test.
