Basic approach to design with geosynthetics
The following design methods are discussed: Design by cost and availability: Based on funds available calculate the maximum allowable geotextile unit price. Best available geotextile to suit the price is selected. Design by specifications: Used exclusively when dealing with public agencies. Several application categories are listed with critical fabric properties. Limitations: Specifications often list minimum required properties. Manufacturer lists average-lot of average roll properties. Design by function: Assess primary function geotextile is required to perform. Calculate the required numerical value of that property. Multiply this value by the factor safety to come to required property. Soil mechanics: Granular soil normally used for fills in conjunction with geotextile. Shear strength of granular material plays important role. Reinforcement: Polymeric materials. Tensile tests evaluated short term. Polymeric materials sensitive to creep and temp. Due weightage should be given to end of design life strength value. Tensile strength evaluated at the end of design life.
