A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Around 150 000 m2 of concrete runway at Atlanta Hartsfield airport in the US were cut out and removed using diamond tooling in only 36 days. Penhall Company was supported by Cushion Cut and Diamond Products with their recommended blade specifications to obtain the best blade performance for sawing the 3000 m runway into panels that could be excavated quickly. Each night, preliminary sawing to a depth of 30 cm was performed and the runway cleaned for the next day's traffic. Saw teams consisted of walk-behind saws making transverse cuts and rider saws making the longitudinal cuts. Final cuts to depths of 40 cm and in some cases 55 cm were made with the runway completely shut down. Then the concrete panels each measuring 2.5 m by 4 m by 40-55 cm thick were loaded onto flat bed trucks and transported to a 6 hectare stockpile yard. They will later be crushed. The cutting and removal operations were accompslihed ahead of schedule.
