A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Geotextiles are used by civil engineers to provide support, stability, separation and drainage. The geotextile sector has become the fastest growing market for technical textiles. In volume terms the sector is expected to more than double in size over the ten years to 2005. Geotextiles play an important role in environmental protection and in reducing the cost of construction and civil engineering projects. In developing countries, major infrastructure projects can consume large quantities of geotextiles, and such projects are encouraging the development of local geotextile manufacturing capacity. Although the geotextile market is growing rapidly, it is characterised by uneven patterns of demand. Also, geotextiles are mostly commodity-type products and price competition can be intense. Some producers have therefore reoriented their strategies so as to offer more complex products. Others have extended their range in order to be able to provide a complete service to their customers. For the future, further R&D (research and development) is needed if the full potential of geotextile materials is to be maximised. Also, many questions concerning the long-term durability of geotextiles remain unanswered.
