Hydration and solidification of hazardous wastes containing heavy metals using modified cementitious materials
Three cementitious materials were used to investigate solidifying and stabilizing hazardous wastes containing heavy metals. The cementitious materials were ordinary portland cement (OPC), clinker kiln dust (CKD) modified OPC, and CKD and quick setting agent (QSA) modified OPC. High alkalies in CKD accelerated the setting and hydration of cement, and QSA influenced quick setting and increased compressive strength of cement. For the solidification and stabilization of heavy metals in the steel industry, dust high alkali CKD modified cement reduced heavy metals leached from the waste form and increased compressive strength of the waste form. The CKD and QSA modified cement presented the least amount of heavy metals leached and the highest compressive strength due to a large number of formation of hydrates, and most effective stabilization of hazardous wastes containing multi-heavy metals.
