Parameters affecting the performance of lime - based repair mortars
In the framework of NATO SfS GR.- Restoration Project an extensive research work has been carried out to define the role of parameters such as binding system, water content, binder - aggregate ratio, degree of compaction and curing regime in the quality of repair mortars. A study of a great number of ancient mortars was proceeded in order to find the characteristics of old mortars for the need of com-patibility between old and new ones. Based on the results it seems that the known Abram's rule is operative and the use of superplasticizers results in higher early strength and lower long - term deformations. The binder aggregate ratios (e.g. 1:2.5 or 1:3) seem to work better with pure lime or lime - pozzolan matrix. An even aggregate gradation also influences positively the strength. Furthermore, the performance of a repair mortar depends on the compaction applied on it during its placement and on the curing conditions in particular at early ages. It could be said that the mixture design of repair mortar can be made on a scientific basis.
