Slaked lime mortar: comparison between two samples supposed to be alike
Two samples of fresh slaked lime mortar, supposed to have the same composition and therefore, the same properties, were studied in order to verify their presumed similarities. Grading and composition were determined respectively by wet sieving and by thermogravimetry. Bulk density and consistency were measured on fresh mortar. From each sample three prisms of 40 x 40 x 160 mm, were prepared and cured at 23 deg C and 50 % r.h. The prisms were used for the determination of flexural and compressive strength, elastic modulus and porosity. Their structural features were observed on thin sections, using polarised light and fluorescence microscopy. The results obtained show that significant differences exist between the two samples. In particular, variations in the slaked lime-aggregate proportions and in the grain size distribution of aggregate, strongly influence the final properties of the mortar. Therefore, these parameters could meaningfully be used to regulate the above-mentioned properties.
