Thermal analysis of polymer flammability
Pyrolysis-combustion flow calorimetry (PCFC) is a new laboratory thermal analysis method for measuring material combustion parameters using only milligram samples. The PCFC technique separately reproduces the solid-state and gas-phase processes of flaming combustion by rapid controlled pyrolysis of the sample in an inert gas stream followed by high temperature combustion of the pyrolyzate in excess oxygen. A simple model of polymer burning provides the scaling relationship between the kinetic heat release rate measured by PCFC and the transport-limited heat release rate in flaming combustion. A rate-independent material flammability parameter emerges from the kinetics that depends only on the chemical composition of the polymer.
