Investigation of the effects of freeze-thaw exposure on composites for seismic retrofit
Glass- and carbon-fiber reinforced polymer composite jackets have shown to be efficient replacement to steel jackets for the seismic retrofit of columns. However, there are concerns related to the use of these materials in cold regions especially as related to the response of the system to freeze-thaw conditions. In this study the effect of short-term freeze-thaw conditions on glass- and carbon-fiber reinforced composite systems is investigated using tensile and DMTa tests methods. The experimental results are assessed under freeze and freeze-thaw conditions combined with distilled water and salt-water immersion. The results show that although there is an increase in tensile properties of the specimens under sub-zero exposure conditioons, freeze-thaw exposure leads a reduction in mechanical properties of the composites. The combination of freeze-thaw cycling with moisture absorption and salt result in further degradation and damage to the composites.
