Carbores - A carbon speciality to improve the performance of refractories bound with phenolic resins
BOF-vessels and electric arc furnaces are the major production facilities for the production of steel. A subsequent treatment of steel is usually done in ladles. For the lining of these furnaces and vessels magnesiacarbon bricks are the state of the art. The bonding is usually achieved with pitch or resin. Customary resin binders are phenolic resins. In order to improve the performance of resin-bonded magnesiacarbon bricks further research work has been carried out. The improvement we achieved by adding a new type of pitch powder. The availability of the carbon novelty CARBORES is the key for the significant brick improvement described. As a result of the new developed 'combined' carbon-bonding matrix (combination of resin and pitch) the new developed magnesiacarbon bricks show the following advantages in comparison to a pure resin bonding: Strengthening of the binder coke by melting and migration of powdered Carbores; softening of the pitch before coking; higher orientated structure of binder carbon. As the characteristics of the binder coke tends to be in the direction of a 'soft' coke the new bonding is named 'soft bonding'.
