The non-linear vibrations of RC beams with distributed cracks
When using vibration measurements in the structural health monitoring of structures it may be necessary to take account of any non-linearity in the structural system. This has led to various models for the vibration behaviour of a cracked beam being proposed. However, the nature of reinforced concrete structures is such that traditional models for the vibration of structures with an isolated crack are inappropriate. This paper considers 5 non-linear models for the vibration of a cracked RC beam and compares the results with experimental observations. It is shown that a simple bi-linear model of crack behaviour is not able to reproduce the softening spring non-linearity observed in practice and a more complex model is required that includes a gradual transition from crack open to crack closed.
