Reusing glazing waste in red stoneware bodies
The environmental impact caused by the increase in glazing waste disposal by the ceramic industry is a great problem. To solve this problem, the use of glaze waste as a raw material in the production of red stoneware in Brazil was studied . The glazing waste varies in its composition from company to company and according to the kind of glaze. A study with two different wastes was performed on the laboratory scale to characterise the wastes and their feasibility for use was defined. After firing of the test specimens at 1020 deg C or 1050 deg C, the bulk density, linear shrinkage, water absorption and loss on ignition was determined. The wastes exhibited a melting point between 1050 deg C and 1080 deg C and can be used as a flux in ceramic bodies produced in the Santa Gertrudes region (Brazil) because these are the firing temperatures usually used by most companies in this area.
