Design and construction of soil-reinforced segmental retaining wall
Mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls use either metallic strips or geosynthetic material as reinforcing elemets with precast RCC panels or modular blocks as facia. The design approach discussed here in this paper for soil-reinforced segmental retaining wall is National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) method. The two limit states considered are Ultimate Limit State and Serviceability Limit State. Ultimate Limit States are associated with collapse or structural failure. Servceability Limit States are associated with deformations occurring within the design life of the structure. External stability analyses examine the stability of the mass formed by the facing units and the reinforced soil zone with respect to active earth pressure forces generated by self weight of the retained soils and minimum length of geosynthetic reinforcement by checking. Internal stability analyses examine the effectiveness of the geosynthetic reinforcement to hold the reinforced soil mass together so that the geosynthetic layers and soil function as a monolithic block.
