Noise control of light weight carbodies in trains: application to sandwich technologies
Sandwich panels with similar surface weight can vary more than 10 dB in noise reduction capacity. The reason is mainly that when the material properties are not chosen with care, the shear wave speed in the sandwich coincides with the speed of sound in air resulting in acoustic transparency. To avoid costly noise problems, a close analysis of each new sandwich design should be undertaken to assess its acoustical performance. Such analysis can be undertaken by established analytical-numerical methods. In addition, a simple semi-empirical calculation scheme is suggested to provide a robust tool for sandwich design. The scheme correlates well with the present experimental data. In the present paper, guidelines for good acoustic design of sandwich panels for vehicle applications are outlined and discussed based on theory and laboratory measurements. It is shown that a sandwich panel may be designed to be a very effective noise barrier when certain design rules are considered.
