Application of tuned liquid column dampers for passive structural control
Tuned liquid column dampers (TLCDs) are passive energy absorbing substructures to control vibrations of buildings when e.g. exposed to earthquake loads. The objective of this paper is to study the influence of TLCDs on the response of multiple degree-of-freedom (MDOF) shear frame structures. The research work is based on the application of serveral TLCDs to reduce translational and torsional vibrations of civil engineering structures. A comprehensive analysis of the theoretical model, the novel absorber equations, and the optimization method employed are presented in detail. Furthermore, the salient features of TLCDs are outlined. In addition to the computer modelling a small scale mechanical model is tested in the laboratory of the institute and described briefly. Both numerical simulations and measured results indicate a significant improvement of the dynamic response for the proposed TLCD absorber system. Considerable vibration reductions are shown in computer simulations and demonstrated experimentally for a plane SDOF shear frame structure for forced vibrations.
