Development of refractory monolithics from recycled spent magnesia chrome bricks
This paper aims to report the practice of recycling the spent magnesia chrome bricks in an Iranian cement plant. The refractory scraps containing toxic hexavalant chromium ions were ground and a new castable monolithic was developed. This material was successfully employed as a refractory lining in a rotary kiln and worked for over one year. By controlling the formulation and choosing a proper particle size distribution, a castable refractory was developed which yields a strong ceramic bonding at 1300 deg C - 1400 deg C. The new material had a cold crushing strength of about 600 kgf/cm2 and exhibited a good resistance to thermal shock and erosion. By reclaiming the spent bricks, the hazardous waste in cement plant was reduced profoundly.
