Architectural design, structural concept and realization of the membrane roof of the Bilkent University amphitheatre
A large semi-circular RC amphitheatre built in Roman style is covered by a membrane roof. The membrane is supported by one main arch with 118 m span and six secondary arches with spans between 34 m up to 46 m. The free area between the main arch and the theatre building is glazed by means of nearly 700 glass and Plexiglas plates mounted on a prestressed cable network. A reticulated spatial structure, as slender and shallow as possible was covered by a mambrane. The supports of four interior secondary arches are not very high above the ground. Therefore their thrust could be conveyed by means of V-shaped horizontal beams into an existing 3 m high retaining wall. On the other hand, the two exterior arches had to be supported out of the theatre building separately on single footings as in the case of the main arch In two points the cable network at the front is anchored to the shear walls of the amphitheatre.
