Porosity and permeability of foamed concrete
A study has been undertaken to investigate the effects, on the properties of foamed concrete, of replacing large volumes of cement (up to 75% by weight) with both classified and unclassified fly ash. This paper reports only on the results of permeability and porosity measured up to an age of 1 year on well-cured concretes. Porosity was found to be dependent mainly on the dry density of the concrete and not on ash type or content. Permeability was measured in terms of water absorption and water vapour permeability. The volume of water (in kg/m3) absorbed by foamed concrete was approximately twice that of an equivalent cement paste but was independent of volume of air entrained, ash type or ash content. The water vapour permeability increased with increasing porosity and ash content.
