Innovation: steel fibre concrete for jointless rail tracks
High speed trains need stable, durable and safe tracks. The old ballasted track system, now over 150 years old and which has served well during this time has to be replaced for this new generation of trains by stable concrete based track systems. A test track for German Rail, consisting of a combination of steel fibre and re-bar reinforced concrete shows, after more than three years under use, excellent and therefore very promising results. In addition to the results obtained from the direct track observation, additional durability tests have been carried out at the iBM[B of the Braunschweig University of Technology. The results of these tests show that a service life of 60 years can be reached for these concrete based tracks without any difficulty. This ensures that such a system is able to meet the stringent safety, economical and reliability requirements set by German Rail.
