Influence of carbon fibers on corrosion risks of steel bars in concrete
Corrosion of steel bars is prevented by the high alkalinity of the concrete in which the bars are embedded. When the concrete is dense enough, durability is guaranteed. Nevertheless, crack formation can lead to a local reduction in pH-value due to carbonation. Hereby, the passivity of the steel can be reduced, leading to finite corrosion risks. Experiments have been performed to study the controlling effect of carbon fibre additions on crack formation due to reinforcement corrosion. They have demonstrated that even the application of low carbon contents not only improved overall mechanical behaviour of concrete, but also resulted in a significant micro-crack arrest capacity. Especially, the cement mortar with low content of carbon fibres revealed an improved behaviour. However, when the fibre content is exceeding a critical value, the corrosion rate of the bar will increase, and will even be larger than for the plain mortar.
