Measurement of crack depth in concrete by ultrasonic method
This paper describes the results of crack depth measurement in concrete by transmitting ultrasonic method. Three techniques were used i.e. BS, Japan and surface wave techniques. Ultrasonic measurements were performed on concrete samples with dimension of 150mm x 150mm x750mm and artificial surface cracks of different depth were fabricated. The results of measurements from the three techniques are compared and discussed. Both BS and Japanese methods are suitable for measuring crack depth of probably more than 20mm deep. Error in measurement using BS method can be reduced by taking more reading and do the averaging since there are signal fluctuation in digital read-out. The use of oscilloscope may help identifying the true signal. In overall surface method is the best but it requires wedge for measuring surface wave velocity. In all methods, the use of oscilloscope helps very much in interpreting the signal.
