Damage evaluation of concrete structures by AE/UT technique
Applicability of acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonic testing (UT) technique for assessing damage in concrete materials was evaluated by comparing scalar damage, AE activities and UT characteristics under repeated loading process. The following findings were obtained: 1. Damage processes can be evaluated by both the scalar damage and AE activity. As approaching yield point, higher AE activity is observed, although obvious growth of scalar damage is not obtained. Applicability of AE technique for not only scattered damage process but also concentrated fracture progress is thus confirmed. 2. In UT technique, it is demonstrated that the damage degree can be evaluated by the propagation attenuation in elastic waves filtered with adequate components of frequency. It is important to use the effective components of frequency for evaluating microcracks. 3. The applicability of AE/UT technique for damage assessment of concrete materials was verified by the tests using small specimens. Therefore, further studies would be necessary for applying this technique to actual concrete structures.
