Luting cement, the stronghold or the weak link in ceramic restorations?
Due to their limited strength and brittleness, full-ceramic crowns require adhesive luting to tooth structure. In order to cope with the curing shrinkage, the cement should have a low module, whilst their task in supporting the ceramic under mechanical loading is best served with high module values. Manipulation of the setting dynamics, e.g., by retarding the initial hardening contributes significantly to balance shrinkage stress and stiffening, thus enabling application of higher module cements. Also intrinsic porosity of the cement forms an escape way for the volume deficiency as a result of shrinkage. Thanks to their gradual setting, glass-ionomer cements exhibit intrinsic characteristics to balance flexibility and stiffness requirements. Notwithstanding resin-based composite cements are more popular amongst the dental practitioners, for material scientific arguments, glass-ionomers deserve more interest as they combine characteristics that brand them as almost ideal and even smart materials.
