Fire resistant coatings for polymeric fibers
In order to lower the cost of fire-retardant school bus upholstery a replacement for Kevlar fiber is sought. Kynol fiber has been identified as a low-cost alternative. Low-cost Kynol fiber requires the application of novel coatings for flame resistance. Several types of coatings were investigated including nanocomposites. In order to further increase the flame resistance of nano-clay composites phosphorous compounds were added. Relevant flame retardardation results will be presented.
