Conservation of historic plain leaded lights and quarried windows
In its nature rather plain, functional and not particularly visually attractive, plain leaded lights or quarry windows need to be approached in some instances with the same regard, ethics and conservation principals as their more colourful cousin the architectural painted and stained glass. The principals which need to be considered when embarking on the conservation/restoration of this all too often far less appreciated kind of architectural artefact are discussed. The basis of the examination is provided in a set of two original 18th-19th Century quarried lancets and an oculus window within Lincoln Cathedral. The success of this conservation effort is partly based on the glaziers skill and hands on work involving also specialist fellow conservators as consultants on site and within the stained glass conservation workshop.
