Recycling of steel slag in clay brick production
The feasibility of steel slag recycling in clay brick manufacturing was evaluated through a laboratory testing and characterization programme performed on three series of clay/slag mixtures. Slags are coarse-grained (1-10 cm) and rich in CaO and FeO with remarkable amounts of MnO and Cr2O3. After a preliminary grinding, they can actually be introduced in clay bodies up to 2-3% wt without particular technological drawbacks and ensuring a complete inertisation of chromium and manganese. Additions of slag up to 5-6% wt involve significant increase of porosity and decrease of mechanical properties; larger amounts induced intolerable changes of most technological parameters.
