Metallurgical examinations were carried out of corroded fragments of a hanger produced from an as-rolled H13N4G8 Cr-Mn-Ni stainless steel bar. Such hangers are used to join outside layers with load-bearing walls of apartment buildings. It was found that after more than ten year exposition in a strongly polluted industrial atmosphere the hangers were damaged as a result of intergranular stress corrosion cracking and pitting. Consequently, H13N4G8 stainless steel cannot be recommended for hangers working in such conditions in spite of its satisfactory mechanical properties. (VDEh)
