Development of foldaway roof structure
Building structures, once constructed, generally never change their shape on a daily basis. Modern building and mechanical techniques are enabling the construction of new organic structures that can transform themselves as required according to their use. In view of such a trend, retractable roof structures are a step towards transformable structures. A retractable roof structure is proposed in this paper that can be stored compactly while ensuring the stability of finishes and is safe under loads acting on the structure. The framework of the retractable roof is structured by connecting top and bottom chords of parallel chord trusses via hinges. Finishes are applied flat on the plane of the trusses and as such maintain stability while the roof is either folded or unfolded. The paper provides an outline of the structural system, model tests for verification and their results, and examples of specific trial design.
