Air cured sisal strand reinforced cement sheet
The known carcinogenic properties of asbestos fibres has prompted the development of non-carcinogenic fibres for the reinforcement of cement, both organic and inorgnic. Sisal reinforcements provide the basis of cement sheet for low cost housing and wall and cladding structures. The work outlined in the present study involved the addition of between 8 % and 13 % by weight of Sisal fibres to Ordinary Portland Cement together with sand and water. To assess the effect of surface treatment of the Sisal, they were subjected to an ingestion bath of CaO prior to mixing and casting. Employing Sisal strands as reinforcement for cement, enables the production of low technology reinforced cement sheeting. The mechanical behaviour of the Sisal pulp reinforced sheets suggest that their strength and energy at fracture characteristics is at an optimum with eight percent reinforcement. This allows utilisation of cement sheets in low load bearing applications found in roofs and cladding for housing. The fracture behaviour of the cement sheeting indicates that toughness and strength is dominated by fibre pullout and fibre breakage mechanism.
