Accelerated carbonation of calcium aluminate cement paste
The carbonation of hydrated calcium aluminate cement in a semi dynamic of 100 % of CO2 atmosphere and 65 % of RH at 20 +- 1 deg C was studied over 100 days. Samples (1 x 1 x 6 cm) were cast with deionised water at a water to cement ratio of 0.4: carbonation was initiated after 28 days curing. The changes of the microstructure before and during the carbonation were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The kinetics of the process was evaluated from the CaCO3 content by means of the thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses. Changes of the mechanical (compressive and flexural) strength were also studied: pore solution was expressed and analysed before and at different periods of the process. The global results were compared with those obtained under natural carbonation condition.
