Comparison between commercial calcium phosphate bone cements
The mechanical, chemical and physical properties of two commercial calciurn phosphate bone cements (Norian SRS and Biobon) were investigated. Specimens were immersed in Ringers' solution for 1, 10, 24, 120, and 240 hrs. The properties of the two materials differed considerably. The chemical reactivity and mechanical performance were greater for the Norian cement, whereas the Biobon Cement had a higher liquid/powder ratio making it more injectable. From the XRD analysis, the Norian cement, soaked for 240 hours, produced a diffraction pattern that was similar to the XRD pattern of bone mineral. At this time point, the compressive strength of the Norian cement was approximately 4 times greater than the value obtained for the Biobon cement.
