Performance of bacterial cement mortar
This paper presents the results of investigation conducted to find the effect of bacterial mineral precipitation in micro cracks on the modulus of rupture of cement mortar beams. It was found that beams with micro cracks remediated with a bacterial (Bacillus pasteurii) concentration of 8.6x108 cells/ml regained 81.97 % of its original strength. Higher concentrations reduced the regaining strength of the beams. This paper also presents the results of investigations conducted to evaluate the performance of the cement mortar specimens with bacteria when exposed to alkaline environment, sulfate attack, deicing chemicals and freeze-thaw. It was found that the specimens with bacteria performed better than control specimens. Scanning Electron Microscope was used to document the role of bacteria in improving the durability aspects of cement mortar.
